College of Arts & Sciences
Assistant Professor of Communication, Tenure-track, Open Specialization
The Department of Communication in the College of Arts & Sciences at Fairfield University invites applications for an assistant professor (tenure-track) to begin in September 2010. Fairfield University is a highly-selective institution in the Jesuit tradition, consistently ranked in the top four comprehensive universities in the North by The U.S. News & World Report. We are located less than one hour from New York City on the scenic Connecticut shoreline. Communication is the largest undergraduate major at Fairfield University (with approximately 350 undergraduate majors); we have a masters program, and a productive, dedicated, and diverse faculty. The department has an undergraduate student club, a large internship program, and a chapter of Lambda Pi Eta. The Department of Communication has three undergraduate tracks: critical media studies, organizational communication, and communication and the human condition, as well as a graduate program with a broad focus in communication theory, strategic communication, and organizational communication. The Department will consider applicants from a wide variety of research backgrounds. Our faculty is collegial and collaborative and we seek applicants who can work well in a department that values different methodological approaches, including quantitative, qualitative, interpretive, and critical methods. Our program is grounded in the liberal arts tradition and focuses on theory and research; we are equally concerned with issues of ethics, power, gender/sexuality, race/ethnicity, class, religion/spirituality, and social justice as these issues relate to communication theory and practice. Applicants should note in their application letter how their teaching and research experience can contribute to our existing program and what additional specialty focus they might bring to the Department.
Qualified candidates will have a Ph.D. in Communication at the time of appointment. The candidate should demonstrate a record of scholarly production, potential for a strong research program, and a strong potential for pedagogical success. The candidate will be expected to teach in both the undergraduate program, with students pursuing a traditional liberal arts 4-year experience, and in our graduate program, which includes non-traditional learners and working professionals pursuing advanced degrees. Ability to contribute to any of the interdisciplinary programs, including Black Studies, Women's Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Peace and Justice Studies, and the Program on the Environment is also desirable. The position requires a 3-3 teaching load, and includes competitive compensation, including excellent fringe benefits and faculty development resources.
For full consideration, please send only (1) a letter of application including a discussion of teaching philosophy and scholarly accomplishments; (2) a curriculum vitae; (3) one set of recent teaching evaluations; (4) official graduate transcripts; and (5) three confidential letters of reference to:
