Religious Studies - Requirements

Fall 2012 New Major/Minor Requirements: Students interested in a minor, a major, or a double major should contact the religious studies department chair. Students who matriculate to Fairfield University after 1 September 2012 (incoming class of 2016) must follow the requirements listed below. Current sophomores, juniors and seniors may follow the earlier system of requirements in consultation with the religious studies department chair.

Major in Religious Studies
For a 30-credit major in religious studies, students:

  • complete RS 101 Exploring Religion
  • complete no more than five courses at the intermediate (200) level
  • complete no fewer than four courses at the advanced (300) level, including two semesters of RS 399
  • ensure, in consultation with the major advisor, that the courses selected at the 200 and 300 level include at least one scripture course as well as courses that emphasize three of these five world religions: Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism.

Courses taken toward a major satisfy the requirements of the core curriculum. Through consultation with a departmental adviser, religious studies majors may structure programs of study that support an area of scholarly focus within religious studies, or that complement a second major in another department.

Minor in Religious Studies
For a 15-credit minor in religious studies, students:

  • complete RS 101 Exploring Religion
  • complete no more than three courses at the intermediate (200) level
  • complete at least one course at the advanced (300) level

Courses taken toward a minor satisfy the requirements of the core curriculum. Through consultation with a departmental adviser, religious studies minors may structure programs of study that complement their major field of study.
