Berlin and Prague with The Glee Club, 2014

Alumni and friends of Fairfield joined the Glee Club for a nine-day tour of Berlin and Prague. They enjoyed three days in Germany’s capital city, including a guided visit to the Berlin Wall and Checkpoint Charlie, as well as a visit to Charlottenburg Palace, one of the most important and largest castles of Berlin.

They then traveled via private motor coach through Dresden for three and a half days in Prague, Czech Republic, and visited the Jewish Quarter and the castle district, including the Old Royal Palace, National Gallery, Golden Lane, St. George’s Basilica, and St. Vitus Cathedral.

‌Nicaragua, 2012

Rev. Charles Allen, S.J., University Chaplain, leader

In early October 2012, Fr. Allen led Fairfield alumni on a life-changing week of service to Hogan Belen in Diriamba, Nicaragua, an orphanage for handicapped and abandoned children run by the Mustard Seed program. The group of six alumni helped to build a new dormitory for the children. There was also time for sightseeing, including visits to Managua and Granada. The group also enjoyed many hours of interacting and playing with the children, and getting to know each other.

‌Barcelona and Madrid, Spain, 2012

Rev. Charles Allen, S.J., University Chaplain, guide

In November 2012, Fr. Allen led the way through the lively cities of Barcelona and Madrid. The journey started in Barcelona, Spain’s second largest city, with a tour of the city, including a visit to Gaudi’s famous unfinished basilica, La Sagrada Família; a visit to the Picasso Museum, and a drive to majestic Montserrat Mountain, where St. Ignatius experienced a vision in 1522 while at the Shrine of Our Lady. Then the group took the AVE high-speed train through the picturesque landscapes of Catalunya, Castilla, and Leon to Madrid, Spain’s capital and largest city. In Madrid, they visited the famous Prado Museum, the Royal Palace, and took a side tour of the medieval city of Toledo.

‌Havana, Cuba, 2013 and 2014

Dr. Jill Deupi, former Director of the Bellarmine Museum of Art, and Dr. Victor Deupi of Fairfield's Art History Program, led the way on two trips to Havana.

Havana, Cuba, is the Rome of the New World, a city that exhibits nearly every phase of cultural, artistic, and architectural development since the early 16th-century in a rich and sensuous manner. With very little development over the last 50 years, modern growth has not transformed or destroyed the historic city, allowing visitors to see in great detail what few New World cities have been able to sustain. Havana is also a thriving creative center with music, art, and entertainment as central staples of its contemporary culture. Fairfield University alumni were introduced visitors to the rich panorama of Cuban art, architecture, and culture.

London, England & Paris, France 2013

Rev. Charles Allen, S.J., University Chaplain, guide

In November, 2013, Father Allen led our alumni on a journey through London and Paris. The trip started with a panoramic tour of London, with visits to ‌Trafalgar Square, St. Paul's Cathedral, the Tower of London, and Buckingham Palace, Westminster and the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, and a performance of A Chorus Line at the London Palladium. Travelers boarded the Eurostar train to Paris, France, to take in the Arc de Triomphe, Notre Dame Cathedral, Champs-Elysees, Place de la Concorde, and the Place Vendome and an excursion to Louis XIV's magnificent Palace and Gardens of Versaille and dinner cruise along the Seine River with a view of the Eiffel Tower. The trip concluded with a guided tour of the Louvre Museum and a cabaret performance.
