1993 Hall of Fame Inductees
Peter J. DeBisschop '83, men's basketball: Peter arrived on the Fairfield University basketball scene in the fall of 1979. Over the next four seasons, Peter amassed 1,219 points and grabbed 650 rebounds, making him 12th and 10th, respectively, in Fairfield's all-time records book. Peter is also ranked sixth in career free throw percentage at .787 and was selected to the All-MAAC Team as a junior. His sharp-shooting ability earned him a .578 field goal percentage, second All-MAAC honors, and selection as the Most Valuable Player of the Banker's Classic in 1982. As a senior captain, Peter was named the team's Most Valuable Player, and selected to All-District I Team by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association and to the All-Met Second team. During his career, the Stags accumulated a record of 48 wins and 62 losses.
James Hanrahan, M.A. '52, men's basketball coach: In 1950, Fairfield University hired Jim Hanrahan, the University's first full-time athletic coach, to guide the men's basketball program. In his first season, he guided the team to a record of 16 wins and 11 losses, a large improvement over the previous year's record of 5 wins and 16 losses. Over the next seven years, the team would have only one losing record under Jim's leadership. Over eight seasons, his teams accumulated a .509 winning percentage going 82-79, ranking Jim third in total wins as coach in Fairfield men's basketball history. During his tenure, he coached the Red Stags through some very important contests, including the team's appearance in the 1951 NAIB post-season tournament, the predecessor to today's NCAA Tournament, Fairfield's first ever post-season tournament bid. During the 1951-52 season, the Red Stags, upset a heavily favored St. Peter's team, which was undefeated at the time and favored to win the prestigious NIT Christmas Tournament to be held later that month.
Elizabeth Sterling '84, women's basketball: Liz joined the Lady Stags basketball program in the early 1980s, just as Fairfield's women's basketball program was entering the Division I ranks. During her four seasons, Liz used her passing ability to provide her teammates with 573 assists, placing her second on Fairfield's all-time assist record. In 1983-84, as a senior co-captain, Liz dished out 197 assists for which she holds the team's single season assist record and also allowing her to lead the MAAC in the same category. During her four seasons as a Lady Stag, Liz collected numerous awards recognizing her talents, including Most Improved Player in her sophomore year and Player with the Most Desire in her junior year. By far, her senior year was the most successful, being named to the All-Tournament Team in the Warner Classic, the Lady Stags Most Valuable Player, and Fairfield University's Female Varsity Athlete of the Year. During her career, the team earned a record of 71 wins and 45 losses, including a record of 22-6 in 1983-84 when Liz was a captain.
Brendan Paul Vane '79, baseball: Brendan joined the Fairfield University baseball team as a walk-on in the fall of 1975 and immediately had an impact on the team. As a freshman, Brendan became the team's starting third baseman and led the team with a .432 batting average. Over his four seasons, he would start 125 of the 127 games that the team played. By the end of his career, Brendan had broken five career team records: most hits (137), most home runs (15), most doubles (26), most extra base hits (46), and most total bases (218). During Brendan's tenure, the Stags had a cumulative record of 69 wins and 58 losses for a winning percentage of .543, and appeared in three consecutive ECAC New England Tournaments. As a senior tri-captain, he led the team to a record of 21 wins and 12 losses, the team's best record to date and received and the ECAC Scholar-Athlete Award. |
