Kathi (Pugliese) Loughlin '80
Kathi graduated from Fairfield University in 1980 with a B.S. in marketing. Upon graduation, she was invited to join GTE's Marketing Associate Development Program, which gave twenty fortunate individuals the opportunity to apprentice with the chief marketing officers of GTE's diversified portfolio of businesses. Her assignments took her to: Sylvania, a consumer electronics and lighting business then in trouble; GTE Business Communications Systems, selling multi-billion dollar communications systems to governments throughout the world; and finally, GTE headquarters, to launch a top-secret, make-it-or-break-it new product, the GTE Flip Phone, which positioned GTE as the first in the direct-to-consumer home electronics business. Participating in this program was an extraordinary break and clearly became the springboard for Kathi’s career in marketing. After several years at GTE, Kathi joined a brazen group of marketing professionals who had the idea that they could compete with AT&T. She was one of the first forty employees of MCI, and after it won the right to compete in the long distance business, headed its marketing communications and promotions group. Kathi was responsible for the introduction and promotion of all of MCI's products, including the MCI Card, Friends, and Family campaign, and MCI's global marketing alliances. This was a second, fantastic opportunity that could only lead to one destination for the next chapter of her career: her own business. So, in 1987, Kathi founded Loughlin Creative, a marketing and advertising agency headquartered in Washington, D.C. which served category leaders, such as American Airlines, American Express, Citibank, Nasdaq, and Verizon, to name a few. In 2000, seeking a new creative challenge (and more time with her husband and children), Kathi left the world of advertising and is currently writing a book series which she plans to publish and merchandise.
Kathi lives in Washington, D.C. and 'Sconset, Mass. with her husband, Tom Loughlin, also a graduate of Fairfield University and a current member of its Board of Trustees.
