Jesuit Universities Humanitarian Action Network (JUHAN)
The purpose of the JUHAN initiative is to engage Jesuit university students, faculty, administrators and staff in developing strategies that better prepare university communities for involving themselves in and understanding the complexities of humanitarian crises - domestic & international. Thus, building a reputation for Jesuit institutions as having the capacity to respond and assist as needed. The project will also focus on how to prepare for a professional career in humanitarian service.
The JUHAN initiative is a collaborative effort among U.S. Jesuit Colleges and Universities. The initial pilot was led by Fairfield University, Fordham University and Georgetown University during the 2007-2008 academic year. There are several components to the project that include: 1.) Leadership Teams consisting primarily of students with a faculty and/or staff resource person charged with raising awareness on their respective campuses about humanitarian issues and working toward strategies for response to various types of humanitarian crises; 2) Academic courses that focus on humanitarian issues from various disciplines; 3.) Lastly, the centerpiece of the project, a national skill-building conference/workshop for undergraduates of Jesuit universities. The first conference, Engaging Students in Humanitarian Action, will be held at Fordham University June 20-22, 2008.
Anyone interested in JUHAN also might be of particular interest to those considering working for the government, non-profit, or humanitarian organizations.
