Student Internship Profiles

Dahiana Martinez '06
Fairfield Internship:
AT&T East Network
New Haven, CT
School of Engineering:
Computer Engineering
Major:
Computer Engineering
InternshipsTwo years ago, AT&T's East Network team had a problem: 471 neighborhood sites for DSL service had to be in place by the end of 2006. The project was completed within a month by a team of employees who created a new web-based tool to collect testing info on a single site. One of the key players on the team was intern Dahiana Martinez '06 who took care of all the programming needs for the project, including coding HTML, JavaScript, and ColdFusion. Today she's an IT associate at Pepsi, Inc. - using the same programming and scripting languages she learned from her internship.

Chelsey Roche '07
Fairfield Internship:
Special Olympics Connecticut
Hamden, Connecticut
College of Arts & Sciences: Communications
Major:
Communications
Chelsey Roche"The highlight of my internship experience was attending the Lilly Awards event in the fall, where extraordinary women throughout Connecticut were honored alongside a Special Olympics athlete. The joy in the room touched all of us, and I felt special being part of something so special to so many. My workplace experience was also enhanced by the internship class I was required to take with other Fairfield student interns. We shared ways to maximize our time spent in the workplace, and the general consensus was to be as proactive as possible. This frame of mind will serve me well in any job in my future."

Julio Martinez '07
Fairfield Internship:
Fondo de Desarrollo Local
Nicaragua
Charles F. Dolan School of Business: Information Systems and
Operations Management
Double Major:
Finance,
Information Systems
Julio Martinez"My internship during winter break was part of a final capstone project for my class. I worked at the largest microfinance institution in Nicaragua, specializing in giving small business loans to low income clients. I learned quickly to be grateful for the technology we have in the U.S. which makes our business processes so much easier than theirs. Just to notify a client that their loan of $500 or $1,000 had come through, I had to hop on the back of a dirt bike with one of the credit officers in 90° weather and take a ride across town to their home because they had no phones (no less faxes or computers). I'll never forget this experience, or the people I met and the way they lived and worked in another part of the world."

Ericka Rojas '08
Fairfield Internship:
Offices of Senator Christopher Dodd of CT and Senator Paul Sarbanes of MD
Washington, D.C.
College of Arts & Sciences: Politics
Double Major:
Politics, History
Rojas"Being challenged in the classroom is so much different than being challenged in the workplace because your efforts don't just effect you - they impact others on staff and their constituents as well. I took my internship seriously because others were counting on me, whether I was writing press releases, attending briefings, responding to constituent letters, or giving tours to the public. I will always remember the Summer of 2006 which I spent in the nation's capital. I got to walk down the same halls as politicians who have been in office, and rode the same elevator with many. I felt part of a world I had always dreamed of - and I felt like I fit right in."
