Graduate Assistantships at Fairfield University


There are a limited number of graduate assistantships available to formally admitted full and part-time graduate students at Fairfield University. Graduate assistants provide services to Fairfield such as administrative support and instructor assistance and in return receive a tuition waiver and, in some cases, a stipend.

Academic and Disability Support Services

Description: The assistantship is a one year position with the possibility of extending it to two years. The graduate assistant will assist with coordinating peer tutorial programs and providing accommodations for students with disabilities.

Skills/Duties: Applicants should have some background or interest in school psychology, special education, counseling or education.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Market the Academic Skills Development opportunities available to our undergrads (media, campus center booth, flyers, email, etc).
  • Develop an understanding of the Academic Skills Development that we offer so that you can provide study skills information to students one-on-one meetings or small groups.
  • Keep detailed files on all students whom you help with Academic Skills Development.
  • Arrange accommadations for students with disabilities (for example, note takers, readers, scribes, extended test time and technical support, etc).
  • Help students with ordering text books through Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic or publishers.
  • Assist in data collection, data anaylsis and report formation process for the Student Support Services and submit a mid year (December), and an annual report.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of all programs and services conducted by ADSS.
  • Assist the Director of ADSS as necessary.
  • Interview and hire note takers and/or readers for students with disabilities (this should be done in collaboration with the Director).
  • Help with weekly payroll: By 8:30 a.m. on Fridays, all note taker/reader time sheets need to be cross checked for validity of hours submitted.
  • Communicate effectively with the other Graduate Assistant so that he/she is kept abreast of relevant information.

While primarily responsible for Students with Disabilities, you will also cover for, and perform the following duties for the Graduate Assistant for the Peer Tutorial Program.

PTP Duties and Responsibilites

  • Market the PTP (both tutors and tutees) on campus so that students know that it is available (media, campus center booth, flyers, email, etc.)
  • Provide information and procedures to prospective tutors/tutees.
  • Recruit and interview prospective tutors.
  • Refer suitable candidates to the Director to hire.
  • Make match-ups between tutors and tutees and notify tutors and tutees of their assignments.
  • Keep detailed files on all tutors and tutees.

Stipend and Benefits: $11,000. Enrollment in the student health insurance plan is available if needed.

Athletics: Administration

Description: This position provides administrative support throughout the Athletic Department. Specific responsibilities may be assigned in any of the department's administrative areas, including academics, business, compliance, facilities or any combination thereof.

Responsibilites: Duties include but are not limited to: assisting the Associate Director of Athletics for Facilities and Operations in all aspects and game operations as well as equipment management. Will assist in the preparation, clean up, and on-site needs associated with the use of facilities to support practices, competitions, camps, clinics, and special events. Assistant must perform duties assigned on a timely basis, in a quality fashion, and with limited on-site supervision. Must be flexible in terms of work schedule (evenings and weekends), and requests by supervisor for short-notice assistance based on unexpected needs (i.e., weather, schedule changes, etc). Will assist in the administration of the following: facility scheduling and operations, student-worker scheduling and management, equipment purchasing and management, and payroll for game workers. May be asked to assist with administration of other areas within the athletic department. Will also assist in the coordination of summer camps which includes but not limited to scheduling, State Licensing, budgeting, and facility set-up.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree required. Must be accepted into a graduate program at Fairfield University.

Experience: Demonstrated aptitude and/or experience in athletics.

Athletics: Coaching

Description: Graduate assistant coaches will assist the head coach in all aspects of the specific sport, including: coaching, recruiting, scheduling, budget management and compliance with NCAA and conference regulations.

Skills/Duties: Bachelor's degree required and prior coaching and collegiate playing experience preferred.

Stipend and Benefits: $10,000-$15,000. Enrollment in the student health insurance plan is available if needed.

Athletics: Sports Medicine

Description: Those selected have the opportunity to choose between a graduate assistantship and internship, depending on interest. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: providing athletic training coverage for men's Soccer, Women's Volleyball, Baseball and Women's Lacrosse and some athletic training room coverage as needed.

Skills/Duties: NATA/BOC Certification is required and a BS/BA in Athletic training or BS/BA in related field with an emphasis on Athletic Training.

Dolan School of Business

Description: The graduate assistant may be involved in gathering background information for study, compiling data, organizing literature for review and other projects as assigned. Usually, the candidate will hold a baccalaureate degree in the acadmics ares assigned to as a graduate assistant. The graduate assistant will have general knowledge of, for research within, the assigned academic department. Strong computer skills are essential. The graduate assistant must be able to work independently and operate as a team member with the Dolan School of Business.

Responsibilities

  • Assist faculty inside and outside the classroom to proctor exams.
  • Assist with grading, organizing and preparing the classroom prior to class meetings.
  • Apply research skills to include internet research, library research, and survey research.
  • Assist undergraduate students and faculty as needed.

Stipend and Benefits: $5,000.00 towards full-time graduate program.

Tuition Value: Graduate Assistantships are worth $5,000.00 towards the full-time tuition of a Dolan School of Business Master's program.

Enrollment Management

Description: The graduate assistant will work in the areas of enrollment management including financial aid, graduate admission, undergraduate admission and enrollment research. Duties will include various functions of financial aid awarding and verification, research on enrollment trends, preparation of print and electronic communication materials, and assisting with graduate admission events.

Skills and Qualifications:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Access and Power Point software
- Experience with Banner database is a plus, but not required

Responsibilities:
- Perform verification of student financial aid files
- Review transcripts for the awarding of aid for federal aid programs

- Assist with the development and maintenance of printed materials, electronic promotional materials and web page information related to financial aid and admission
- Assist at admission information sessions and events as needed
- Assist in preparation of enrollment research data analysis and research reports

Kirby Family Literacy Program - Computer Technology Project

Description: This assistantship involves recruiting, training and supervising the work of 100-150 undergraduate participants in the Literacy Project who work in Head Start classrooms in Bridgeport to enhance low income preschooler's language and school readiness skills. Most of the work takes place on campus but reliable transportation is necessary to do on-site visits at the Head Start sites in Bridgeport.

Skills/Duties: Applicants must be available mornings and early afternoons. Preference given to individuals willing to make a two-year commitment to the position.

Student Diversity Programs

Description: Plan and coordinate the annual Christopher B. Love Student Achievement Celebration (fall) and the Multicultural Talent Show (spring). Assist with the planning and coordination of the Academic Immersion program and the Cura Personalis Mentoring Program. Provide support for multicultural clubs and organizations. Assist with the development of two educational programs that focus on various ethnic and cultural celebrations.

Description: This position will assist the staff of University College in collecting, preparing and reporting data for credit and non-credit programs. University College programs include, but are not limited to undergraduate credit programs, the office of international education and non-credit certificate programs.

University College: Advising Assistant

Description: This position will assist the University College's office of advising services. This population primarily works with undergraduate, non-traditional students. The Advising Assistant will aid advisors in student file management, recruitment and communication plans.

- Must possess strong interpersonal skills
- Must be able to work independently and operate as a team member with University College

- Cover front office duties: i.e. answer phones, filing, greeting students, etc.
