EN 388 Jewish Literature: From Tevye to Seinfeld: Laughter, Tears, and Justice in 20th Century American Jewish Literature
Written narrative has been central to Jewish identity and the Jewish search for meaning. Twentieth-century American Jewish writers achieved a peak of influence, writing with humor, pathos, and a search for justice, in works that reach beyond a Jewish audience, while drawing on Yiddish and Jewish ethnic and historical sources. This course surveys American Jewish Literature in film, prose, drama, and poetry. Film includes the Three Stooges, the Marx Brothers, comic writers of the Borscht Belt, Woody Allen and Mel Brooks, and Seinfeld. Prose authors include Sholem Aleichem, Anzia Yezierska, Henry Roth, Bernard Malamud, Saul Bellow, Philip Roth, Cynthia Ozick, and Art Speigelman. Dramatists include Clifford Odets, Ben Hecht, Arthur Miller, and Wendy Wasserstein. Poets include Emma Lazarus, Alan Ginsburg, and Robert Pinsky. This course is taught by Professor Diane Feigenson. RS 255 Second Temple Judaism and the Dead Sea Scrolls
The Dead Sea Scrolls have rightly been called the greatest manuscript discovery of the twentieth century. Discovered in 1947, they have made a tremendous impact on how scholars today understand Judaism and Christianity in antiquity. Our examination of the community, texts, and archaeology of the Dead Sea Scrolls will begin with a study of the Second Temple Period (520 BCE - 70 CE), one of the most important in the history of Judaism. This course will examine the political, social, and theological developments of this period so that the community of the Dead Sea Scrolls and their writings may be situated within their proper context. Students will be invited to read primary texts closely and secondary texts critically as they consider the influence and relationship between texts and their community. This course is taught by Dr. Angela Harkins. (3 credits)
