Adaptive Equipment and Software

A variety of adaptive equipment and software is available at the Library for persons with disabilities, including:

ABBYY FineReader:

An OCR (Optical Character Recognition) and PDF conversion software. It provides functionality for converting images received from a scanner, a digital camera or by fax, as well as PDF files, into editable and searchable formats. The program accurately retains formatting and layout of documents and supports a wide range of recognition languages and output file formats.

Dragon Naturally Speaking:

Speech to text software, available at the adaptive technology workstation in the Media Department, lower level. Please dial (203) 254-4000 ext. 2876 to reserve a time slot on the adaptive technology computer.

Ednalite VIP Masterlens:

Magnifies print and provides lighting; available at the Circulation desk, main level.

JAWs:

A screen reader that works with a computer to provide access to software applications and the Internet. It is available at the adaptive technology workstation in the Media Department, lower level. Please dial (203) 254-4000 ext. 2876 to reserve a time slot on the adaptive technology computer.
JAWs Training

HP Scanjet 8390:

A document scanner for digitizing print materials. It is available at the adaptive technology workstation in the Media Department, lower level. Please dial (203) 254-4000 ext. 2876 to reserve a time slot on the adaptive technology computer.
Help Guide PDF

Kurzweil 1000:

A scanning, reading and writing software for use by people who are blind, visually impaired, or who have specific learning disabilities. It is available at the adaptive technology workstation in the Media Department, lower level. Please dial (203) 254-4000 ext. 2876 to reserve a time slot on the adaptive technology computer.
Product Documentation & Tutorial

Also includes a Classic Literature CD PDF:
The Classic Literature CD is a portable library of approximately 1,800 electronic texts, selected from public domain material available from Web sites such as www.gutenberg.net.

Kurzweil Reading Edge:

Scans print material and converts it to an audible format; available in the Media Department, lower level.

Loud-r Hearing Enhancer:

Allows hearing impaired patrons to converse more easily with staff; available at the Circulation desk, main level.

ZoomText:

Adaptive software that provides advanced screen magnification for vision impaired computer users. It is available at the adaptive technology workstation in the Media Department, lower level. Please dial (203) 254-4000 ext. 2876 to reserve a time slot on the adaptive technology computer.
ZoomText Tutorial

In addition to the product materials and documentation linked to above, a binder is available in the Library at the Circulation Desk (on Permanent Reserve) that contains documentation on how to use the adaptive technology software and equipment. If you require training or assistance with using these technologies, please contact the University Academic & Disability Support office at (203) 254-4000 ext. 2615.

Materials in Alternative Formats

The library Media Department purchases non-print materials, including DVDs (most of which provide subtitles), videocassette tapes, audiocassette tapes, music CDs, CD-ROMs and other formats. If the library does not own what you need in an accessible format, Fairfield University Student Support Services (203) 254-4000 ext. 2445 can secure copies in Braille or large print, or on audiocassette tape (RFBD). They will also provide screen readers and other readers.

Fairfield University Student Support Services

The Office of Student Support Services provides support services to help all students achieve academic success. Students can take advantage of Peer Tutoring, and they may receive individualized assistance in many skill areas necessary for academic achievement.
