Google Scholar Guide

Search tips for Google and Google Scholar 

1.     Lead with most important word or phrase first.

2.     Add search terms to limit and pinpoint results. Google assumes AND, so don’t include it.

3.     Use    to  exclude all results that include this search term, as in   .

4.     Use  ~  to  include all results that include this search term and its synonyms.    returns results with auto, car, automobile.

5.     Use  “ “  to only return results that include the exact phrase, as in .

6.     Use OR to return results that include either of your search terms, as in , OR must be capitalized.

7.     Use  intitle:  as in   to only return results that include your search term in the document’s title. 

8.     Use  site:  as in   to only return results with .edu extension in the URL.

Additional Search tips for Google Scholar

9.     Use author: as in   to return papers written by people with the name Flowers.

10. Advanced Search allows you to restrict search to a specific publication and/or a specific time period.

11. Google Scholar also supports most of the advanced operators in Google web search.

How can I see Find It @ Fairfield U links in Google Scholar?

If you are coming to Google Scholar from within the Fairfield U network (anywhere on campus, or if you have already signed in through the Library's proxy server from our database page), these links will automatically show up in Google Scholar search results.

If you are not coming from within the Fairfield U network, you can still configure your Google Scholar Preferences to display Find It @ Fairfield U links, as follows:

1) Go to Google Scholar at http://scholar.google.com/ 

2) Click on the Scholar Preferences link 

3) In the search box for Institutional Access, type in Fairfield University. Tick the check-box beside "Fairfield University" and then click "Save Preferences." You can include up to 3 libraries.

How can I export my Google Scholar citations to RefWorks?

  1. From the Google Scholar search page, click on the Scholar Preferences link.
  2. Scroll down to the Bibliography Manager section.
  3. Select Show Links to Import into and select RefWorks from the drop-down.
  4. Click Save Preferences.
  5. Conduct your search in Google Scholar.
  6. Each record displayed will have an Import into RefWorks link. Clicking on the link will launch the RefWorks login page.
  7. Once you log in to RefWorks, you are brought automatically to the Edit view of the reference. If you do not wish to edit the record, you can navigate to any other area of RefWorks.
  8. Your record is stored in your Last Imported Folder.
