About the Cataloging Unit

The mission of the Cataloging Unit is to provide discoverability and access to materials which we own and/or to which we can provide electronic linkage.  Cataloging for print, media, and e-resources is accomplished through the use of OCLC, a bibliographic utility that contains over 800 million records, and also through vendor-supplied MARC records.  Records are copied and edited in order to accurately describe and provide access to resources. Original cataloging is done for material for which records are not otherwise available.

The Cataloging Unit is responsible for updating and maintaining the local online catalog with current name and subject authorities and any other pertinent information to ensure consistency and accuracy of the bibliographic records and hyperlinks included in the database.  End processing work includes adding and editing item records as well as the physical processing of materials.  Additionally, daily, monthly, and annual statistics are within the purview of the Unit.
