Welcome to the Office of Service Learning

Image: Students on campus have many service learning opportunitiesService-learning is a pedagogical approach that links academic study and community-based service so that each is strengthened and both are transformed. Housed within the Center for Faith & Public Life, the service learning program at Fairfield University facilitates connections between focused academic learning that meets disciplinary standards for rigor, with meaningful and appropriate service that addresses needs identified by and with communities. Critical (i.e., conceptual/academic, civic/social, and personal/spiritual) reflection is an essential component of service learning, as is the development of partnerships with the community that are based in mutuality, reciprocity, and cooperative education for the common good.

We are committed to solidarity and collaboration with people who are marginalized, especially those who are materially poor. In addition to being mindful of "best practices" that have been developed in the academic service-learning movement nationally, our work is inspired by, and flows from, the Jesuit Catholic educational mission of Fairfield University that calls for the dynamic integration of academic excellence, social responsibility, and faith that promotes justice.
