Policies Regarding ClinicalAbsences
- Students are expected to attend all clinical nursing activities with absences permitted only if certified as unavoidable because of illness or other cause.
- Make-up of missed clinical experiences will be determined by the clinical faculty member and Course Coordinator.
- Each faculty member will discuss with her/his clinical students contingencies for illness and weather problems.
Transportation
Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the various facilities used for the practice of nursing, as well as any parking expenses incurred. Car pooling is a common practice with students.
Uniforms
This policy is formulated to ensure standards of dress and appearance that reflect professionalism and represent Fairfield University to area hospitals and community settings. The following is considered to be neat, professional, comfortable and congruent with the dress of nursing practitioners. Faculty will ask students to leave the clinical area if appearance is not appropriate.
Students are responsible for obtaining appropriate uniforms.
- Red Polo shirt
- Red scrub top must be purchased from Fairfield University Bookstore
- Black scrub pants must be purchased from Fairfield University Bookstore
- Black shoes: sneakers or clogs
Students must have the following equipment:
- watch with a second hand or digital second read out
- stethoscope with bell and diaphragm
- bandage scissors
- a small pad with blue/black pen
- Hair must be neat, secured (if long), and should not touch the collar.
- Nails must be trimmed to avoid injury to clients, and if nail polish is worn it should be a neutral color and not be chipped.
- Jewelry other than a simple wedding band should not be worn in the clinical area. Small stud earrings may be worn in the ears. Body piercing and body art must be concealed with clothing.
- Make-up should be used in moderation
- Male students should be clean shaven or have neatly trimmed beards or moustache.
Gum chewing is not permitted. It detracts from your professional demeanor.
Cell phones must be in the off mode during clinical.
Graduate Program
Graduate student attire in the clinical setting should be neat, professional, comfortable, and congruent with the agency's policy. All students should wear a Fairfield University Identification badge.

Identification Tags for Graduate and Undergraduate Students
Obtaining an ID badge prior to clinical is the students responsibility. Fairfield University School of Nursing identification tags can be purchased through:
