Faculty Children Exchange Program (FACHEX)

The Faculty and Staff Children Exchange program (FACHEX) was established in 1971 by the Association of Jesuit College and Universities (AJCU). It is an undergraduate tuition remission program for the children of current, full-time faculty and staff who are employed at one of the 26 participating Jesuit colleges and universities. Fairfield University is a participant in this program.

Through this initiative, the dependent children of faculty, administrators, and staff who are eligible for tuition remission at their own Jesuit institutions may be granted tuition remission at one of the participating FACHEX schools. For a more comprehensive overview, visit the FACHEX website at www.tuitionexchange.org.

Procedures for admission to Fairfield University under FACHEX

  • Faculty, administrators, and staff should obtain certification of eligibility for FACHEX from their home institution. The FACHEX coordinator will confirm benefits eligibility then notify Fairfield University’s FACHEX liaison. January 1 is the last day Fairfield will accept FACHEX certification for the following fall.
  • Students must apply for admission to Fairfield University within the published deadlines
    • Early Action: November 1
    • Early Decision I: November 15
    • Early Decision II/ Regular Decision: January 15
  • Fairfield allows FACHEX applicants to apply under any of the published admission application deadlines. (For example, it is not necessary for FACHEX applicants to apply under Early Action or Early Decision). A FACHEX determination will be made after the student is certified as eligible and has been accepted for admission. FACHEX certification does not qualify the student for admission nor does an offer of admission guarantee a FACHEX award.
  • Applicants requesting FACHEX consideration should file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE by December 1 for Early Action and Early Decision, and by January 15 for Regular Decision and Early Decision II. Since FACHEX awards are extremely limited, other forms of financial aid may make it possible to attend Fairfield University if a FACHEX benefit is not offered. Covering any balance outside of FACHEX should be discussed with Fairfield University’s Office of Financial Aid. Contact Emily Cipriano, Associate Director of Financial Aid, at emily.cipriano@fairfield.edu.

 Conditions

  • Award decisions are made by an inter-departmental committee and are primarily based on academic achievement.
  • FACHEX benefits are available only to new first-year students (offers are not extended to students in their sophomore, junior or senior years). A waitlist will be maintained for freshmen applicants through May 1. A continuing student FACHEX waitlist is not maintained.
  • FACHEX awards are extremely limited in number, and therefore, highly competitive in terms of both space and selectivity. Typically, 10 FACHEX benefits are awarded annually from a pool in excess of 250 benefit applications. Statistics outlining the profiles of students awarded the benefit are not maintained.
  • The FACHEX benefit provides the annual cost of full-time undergraduate tuition at Fairfield University. It does not cover part-time, intersession courses, summer school, graduate tuition, study abroad, room and board, books, travel related expenses, applicable fees, or other costs of attending Fairfield University. The maximum number of credits a student may take per semester under the FACHEX benefit is 18. The FACHEX award will void all institutional scholarships and grants previously awarded. However, privately funded scholarships not awarded by Fairfield University will not reduce a FACHEX benefit, nor will federal need-based aid.
  • After all admission decisions have been made, Fairfield University will inform FACHEX applicants of their status by April 15. Notification may occur over the course of a few rounds between January and April. Students must remain academically eligible to return to Fairfield University and continue to be eligible from their home campus.

Recertification

Recertification is handled each year in the system shared by benefit liaisons. Students will ordinarily be able to remain in the program for four years, but continued participation depends upon employment eligibility and the student's satisfactory academic standing at the host institution. Annual submission of an application is not required.

Each college/university determines student admissions eligibility as well as which academic programs are covered. FACHEX benefits cover only tuition. Room and board, fees, books, etc. are not included. The colleges and universities currently participating in the FACHEX program are listed here.

Fairfield University's liaison is responsible for certifying eligibility for each employee. Fairfield University cannot guarantee admission at the host institution. Also, admission into the host institution does not guarantee a FACHEX scholarship. Host institutions often choose their scholarship recipients based on the academic profile of the applicant and other institutional priorities. Most schools will only consider first-year students as applicants and may or may not maintain waitlists. It is important to recognize that FACHEX awards are extremely limited in number and highly competitive. As a result, there are no guarantees to the children of any faculty or staff member that they will be able to utilize the FACHEX benefit at the institution of their choice.

Full-time faculty and staff who will have at least four years of continuous service by September 1, 2025, may submit an application by October 1, 2024.

It is Fairfield's policy to only certify children who will enter college as first-time, full-time freshmen. Fairfield does not certify spouses of employees.

Application Process

  • The online application located under the “Families” tab on tuitionexchange.org/ is the submission method for certification. If you have less than four years of service at Fairfield University as of September 1, 2025, you may become eligible for FACHEX funding if your child is attending a Jesuit institution once you reach four years of service. Fairfield will then certify your eligibility. However, it is up to the receiving institution whether they award FACHEX funding to upperclassmen.
  • Please be diligent in having benefit applications to all institutions to which you wish to apply for FACHEX submitted by the October 1 submission deadline. Fairfield employees will learn of their certification decisions no later than November 1.
  • Upon certification, relevant online applications will be approved in the shared system. It is not necessary to wait for certification in order to proceed with the submission of admission applications to each institution to which you are applying. Each institution sets their own requirements as to if it is necessary for FACHEX applicants to apply by a certain admission deadline (Early Action or Early Decision, for example). Benefit decisions are often made by importing institutions in the spring.
  • We also encourage families to follow the regular financial aid procedures for each school to which they are applying in order to have all packaging options in front of them when making their final enrollment decision. You will be asked on the online FACHEX applications if you are applying for financial aid. The FAFSA and/or CSS Profile may or may not be required by schools in order to be considered for FACHEX. A benefit liaison list may be found here.
  • Please note that oftentimes merit and/or athletic scholarships awarded by the importing institution cannot be stacked with FACHEX awards. Sometimes grants not awarded by the importing institution and/or Federal financial aid can be stacked. Covering any balance outside of FACHEX should be discussed with each institution's Office of Financial Aid. Fairfield University’s Financial Aid contact with FACHEX knowledge is Emily Cipriano, Associate Director of Financial Aid, emily.cipriano@fairfield.edu.

  • The TUIEX benefit for Fairfield University for the 2025-2026 academic year is $43,000 and may include or be offset by any other awards of federal or state scholarships or grants. It does not cover part-time, intersession courses, summer school, graduate tuition, study abroad, room and board, books, travel related expenses, applicable fees, or other costs of attending Fairfield University. The maximum number of credits a student may take per semester under the TUIEX benefit is 18. The TUIEX award will void all institutional scholarships and grants previously awarded. Fairfield University's liaison is responsible for certifying eligibility for each employee, but this does not guarantee admission at the host institution. Also, admission into the host institution does not guarantee a Tuition Exchange scholarship. Host institutions often choose their scholarship recipients based on the academic profile of the applicant and other institutional priorities. Most schools will only consider incoming first-year students as applicants and may or may not maintain waitlists. It is important to recognize that TUIEX awards are extremely limited in number and highly competitive.

Tuition Exchange is not a guaranteed benefit. Typically, six to ten employees become newly eligible to participate each year and the minimum length of service/ employment with Fairfield University for eligible employees to qualify for Tuition Exchange falls between eight and ten years.

It is Fairfield's policy to only certify children who will enter college as first-time, full-time freshmen. Fairfield does not certify spouses of employees.

The Tuition Exchange scholarship does not always cover full tuition, but an amount set by the host institution. Tuition Exchange, however, sets a minimum tuition amount to be honored by the host institution. The Fairfield University minimum for 2025-2026 is $43,000.

Full-time faculty and staff who will have four years of continuous service by September 1, 2025, may submit an application by October 1, 2024.

Application Process

  • The online application located under the “Families” tab on tuitionexchange.org/ is the submission method for certification.
  • All eligible employees will be rank ordered by years of service as determined through the Office of Human Resources. Eligibility will be consistent with current policies.
  • On November 1, each applicant will receive a decision as to verification of eligibility. If the number of applicants exceeds the number of Tuition Exchange scholarships available for export, applicants will be selected as follows:
    • First priority will be given to applicants based on continuous full-time seniority
    • Should there be a tie among applicants with the same number of service years, actual date of hire will be used.
  • It is not necessary to wait for certification in order to proceed with the submission of admission applications to each institution to which you are applying. Each institution sets their own requirements as to if it is necessary for TUIEX applicants to apply by a certain admission deadline (Early Action or Early Decision, for example). Benefit decisions are often made by importing institutions in the spring.
