About Institutional Research

Established in Fall 2007, the Office of Institutional Research (OIR) provides a comprehensive program of institutional research and planning. Consistent with its charge to support the University's mission and strategic objectives, the OIR reports to the Provost.

Our important work includes:

  • Ensuring the integrity and reliability of information for effective decision-making and institutional planning that will enhance the student experience and growth of the institution.
  • Coordinating the collection, organization, analysis, and reporting of all institutional data to provide consistent and timely information to internal and external constituencies.
  • Optimizing research design, data analytics and visualization, performance dashboards, and probability modeling to provide quantitative insights to guide Fairfield toward its goals.
  • Generating innovative ways to evaluate data while also providing unique insights, outreach options, and data-driven support to the campus community and beyond.
  • Serving as the primary contact for compliance reporting to state, federal, accrediting agencies, and external publications and rankings.
  • Initiating major research projects and providing consultation on research methods, data integrity and database analysis, survey design and analysis, and institutional assessment activities.

The Common Data Set (CDS) is a collaborative effort among data providers in the higher education community and publishers as represented by the College Board, Peterson's, U.S.News & World Report, and the Wintergreen/Orchard House. The combined goal of this effort is to improve the quality and accuracy of information provided to all involved in a student's transition into higher education, as well as to reduce the reporting burden on data providers.

The CDS is a set of standards and definitions of data items. Each of the higher education surveys conducted by the above publishers incorporates the items from the CDS as well as unique items proprietary to the publisher. Fairfield University completes the CDS in the fall of each year with October 1 being the census date.

If you have any questions on the CDS items or answers, please email us.
