What is Expected of You

Students studying abroad are required to abide by Fairfield University academic and student conduct policies, as well as all local laws, with violations to be addressed through the Dean of Students Office at Fairfield. Additionally, students are required to complete the weekly Travel Log with their intended travel. All students must have access to a credit card as well as a cell phone with an international call and data plan while abroad.

Residential Engagement & Responsible Living

Our students are guests in the housing accommodations provided through our Centers and Approved programs abroad. Housing regulations in our overseas locations reflect both program requirements and local laws. All students must abide by the specific housing rules and regulations for their program. These rules are discussed on-site during orientation and are reflected in the program brochure pages. Failure to follow these rules and regulations can result in code of conduct discipline up to and including expulsion from the program.

These rules include, but are not limited to, abiding by guest and visitor policies; abiding by noise curfew; maintaining the safety of the housing unit by securing the doors and not admitting unknown persons; maintaining the prescribed cleaning standards; maintaining the condition of the physical structure, the furnishings, and the equipment in the housing unit, and being responsible for any damages.

Visits From Friends & Family

Visits from family and friends are allowed, however, students must remember that guests are not permitted to stay overnight in their abroad accommodations. Students with overnight guests in their housing risk dismissal from their program.

We highly recommend that people wishing to visit students abroad do so during the program breaks. This will give students enough time to become acclimated to their host program and country, and allow them to adjust to their new academic culture.

Community Engagement

All our Center and approved partner programs provide students with a variety of activities and program options that students commit to prior to leaving the United States. Volunteering, internships, experiential activities, and service learning are all valuable ways to better understand the culture and to develop both as an individual and a professional.

Our Center programs require all participants to contribute to their new communities through service and mission-based programming. These activities and experiences are an intentional part of the program and allow our students to demonstrate their appreciation to their host community. Students must attend all mandatory program events.

Responsible Health & Safety

Our students participating in study abroad are reminded that responsible management of current medical conditions, illness, treatments, or medications is essential to your continued health and wellbeing. Students who have current medical conditions, are under medical care or treatment, or are taking prescription medications are urged to self-disclose with the staff in Global Fairfield on a management plan. With this information we will be able to coordinate your continued care, connect you with medical professionals who will be able to advise you on services and support available to you in your host country, and advise you as to any limitations, restrictions or concerns you need to be aware of. Without this collaboration and information, we will not be able to ensure your continued health and well-being while abroad. This information is gathered in the mandatory Agreement and Release Form all students must submit upon program approval.

In Case of Emergency

Students should contact their on-site program director or resident director in the event of an emergency or issue for guidance on the next steps and local resources.

  • Sickness or Injury
  • Mental Health Concerns
  • Theft
  • Lost Items (Cell phone, passport, wallet, keys, etc.)
  • Roommate or Housing Issues
  • Maintenance Requests
  • Academic Concerns

In the event of a larger emergency or issue, such as political unrest, Global Fairfield will communicate directly with students and families by email and phone. Please make sure your application requirement for Emergency Contacts is up to date and correct.

Students should register with the State Department's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) as a U.S. Citizen going abroad, to keep "in the know" about other important travel updates that may come out during your time abroad.

Students can also use the international health and safety’s “Check In” feature on the APP at any point they feel unsafe or unwell.

Preparing to Be Back on Campus

Obtaining Housing

Fairfield students who study abroad during the fall semester are guaranteed housing when they return from abroad in the spring. Since they do not participate in the On-Campus Lottery to select housing for the Fall semester, there are a few options for the students to choose from to procure housing.

Fairfield University students who study abroad during the spring semester will follow the University Housing Lottery process while abroad. Non Fairfield should stay in contact with their home institution’s Res Life and Registrar.

Both Fairfield and Non-Fairfield students must stay engaged in their university emails while abroad to ensure optimal housing placement.

Registering for Classes

Students will register for the following semester as usual while abroad. They are expected to know what courses they need to take before departure for their semester abroad since they will be unable to meet with their advisor while abroad. The Office of the Registrar will email students the date and time for their registration, their PIN, as well as information on the course booklet. Should students have any questions, they should contact the Office of the Registrar directly.
