For in-service teachers, the bilingual cross-endorsements prepare elementary and secondary teachers to teach grade-level academic curriculum in a language other than English.

What You'll Learn and Do

Teachers seeking a degree can enroll in one of two programs:

Bilingual Leadership in English Acquisition Pedagogy (33 credits) or Bilingual Education Sixth Year Certificate (SYC) of Advanced Study.

The Bilingual Education programs offer in-service teachers:

Cross-endorsement only in elementary bilingual education (18 credits) or Cross-endorsement only in secondary bilingual education (18 credits).

Experiential Learning

Fairfield's programs benefit from being located near K-12 schools in our partner districts (Bridgeport, Danbury, Greenwich, Norwalk, Stamford, and Stratford) with long-established TESOL and bilingual education programs.

Most of our courses are offered from Monday-Thursday in the late afternoon and evening. A few courses are offered online. We also offer summer courses from late May through early August.

If you are interested in taking a course as a non-degree/ visiting student, please contact the Office of Graduate Admission at gradadmis@fairfield.edu for more information.

Courses include topics such as, bilingualism, the role of culture in language acquisition, theories of learning, second language methods of teaching, curriculum and materials development, linguistics, and assessment of English language learners. A complete listing of courses with a description is available in the graduate catalog.

We keep our classes small. The typical maximum class size is 20, but class sizes range from 6 to 20.

The cross-endorsement is six courses. Students who take two courses in spring, summer, and fall can complete the program in one calendar year.

The MA in Bilingual Leadership in English Acquisition program is 11 courses (33 credits). The Sixth Year Certificate is 10 courses (30 credits).

These programs can be completed in 18 months to two years depending on how many courses students take each semester and in the summer. Students are required, however, to complete their degree within six years after they begin their first course.
