Associate professor of studio art Suzanne Chamlin’s dreamy paintings were featured in the fall 2023 issue of the publication put forth by the National Seminar on Jesuit Higher Education.
The fall 2023 print edition of Conversations on Jesuit Higher Education featured the artwork of Suzanne Chamlin, MFA, associate professor of studio art in the College of Arts and Sciences. Conversations magazine, sponsored by the National Seminar on Jesuit Higher Education, publishes twice each academic year. The periodical engages faculty and staff from all 28 U.S. Jesuit colleges and universities in discussions on the Jesuit Catholic mission. Articles and artwork are solicited from across the country to explore varied topics, from the core curriculum and hiring for mission, to education of the whole person and the arts in Jesuit higher education.
“In January 2024, I received an email from Jim McCartin, PhD, chair of the National Seminar on Jesuit Higher Education and associate professor of theology at Fordham University, asking if I’d be interested in sharing some images of my work for inclusion in Conversations’ fall 2023 print issue,” Chamlin said. “I selected paintings that I did while painting on site from observation and left it to the editors to decide what to include. I hope that the paintings helped to complement the content of the articles.”
This coming April, Chamlin’s artwork will again be featured — this time in a special exhibition at the Fairfield University Art Museum. In her exhibition of recent work, which will be on view from April 5 to July 27, 2024, Chamlin explores ideas about color theory and light through a series of landscape and interior stills. For each of her paintings, Chamlin sets a highly specific palette; experimentation within this limited range then guides her decisions about process and pictorial space.
Chamlin’s drawings are in the collections of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., The Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, and in the Nelson Atkins Museum in Kansas City, Missouri. She has attended numerous residencies including at the Albers Foundation and Yaddo. Chamlin received her BA from Barnard College and her MFA in painting from Yale University.
