Stags Advance in MAAC Championship

The men will play in Friday’s semifinal round, women's team advances to Saturday's championship game.

The Fairfield University men’s and women’s basketball teams have advanced in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship. The men are set to compete in Friday’s semifinal round, while the women have move on to Saturday's MAAC Championship Game at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Fairfield men’s basketball is the second-seeded team in the MAAC. The Stags knocked off Iona, 68-63, on Wednesday evening to reach the Friday semifinals, where they will challenge third-seeded Marist. Opening tip-off on Friday is set for 9 p.m.

Fairfield is 21-11 on the season; on the heels of the program’s first 20-win season since 2013, the University announced on Tuesday that Chris Casey has been named head coach after serving in an interim role since October.

The top-seeded women’s program — also ranked #25 in the nation with a 30-1 overall record — defeated Rider in the quarterfinals and Canisius in the semifinals to reach the championship round. The victory ran Fairfield’s winning streak to a conference-record 28 consecutive games. The Stags will challenge either second-seeded Niagara or third-seeded Siena on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. with a berth in the NCAA Championship on the line. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.
