The Stags have earned points in four sports thus far in 2024-25.

Fairfield University Athletics is ranked ninth in its classification in the latest Learfield Directors’ Cup standings, which span from the beginning of the 2024-25 academic year to the recent conclusion of the college basketball season. The Learfield Cup measures success across all NCAA programs with points earned for participation and advancement in NCAA Tournament play.

Fairfield is ninth in the I-AAA class, which includes the more than 100 Division I athletic programs that do not sponsor football. The Stags have garnered points in the standings after winning MAAC Championships in women’s soccer, volleyball and women’s basketball, along with an NEC Championship in field hockey to qualify for the NCAA Tournament in those sports. Fairfield is also the top-ranked MAAC team and ranks fourth of the 21 Division I Jesuit institutions in the Learfield Cup standings.

“Along with winning the MAAC Commissioners’ Cup, it is an annual strategic objective of our department to rank among the DI-AAA and overall leaders in the Learfield Cup standings,” said Vice President for Athletics Paul Schlickmann. “To have four Stags teams reach the national stage thus far this year, with multiple spring opportunities still ahead of us, is a notable achievement amongst our national peers. I am proud of our student-athletes, coaches and staff for embracing this challenge to stand as competitors with some of the most highly regarded athletics programs in the country.”

The University of Vermont leads the list of I-AAA institutions on the heels of winning the 2024 Men’s Soccer National Championship. The ledger of teams joining the Stags in the top 10 also includes Providence, Cal Baptist, Denver, Creighton, St. John’s, Boston University, Lipscomb and Gonzaga.
