Stags’ Swimming Duo Earns Multiple Medals at Tokyo Paralympics

Colleen Young '20 and Matthew Torres '23

Colleen Young '20 and Matthew Torres '23 medaled at this summer's Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

Colleen Young ’20 added two medals to her trophy case, and Matthew Torres ’23 made his first trip to the Paralympics podium.

A pair of Fairfield University Swimming & Diving standouts have won medals for Team USA at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games this past week in Japan. Colleen Young ’20 earned a pair of top-three finishes in the pool, and Matthew Torres ’23 won his first career Paralympics medal.

A seven-time MAAC Champion in her Fairfield career, Young won a silver medal in the 200m Individual Medley and claimed bronze in the 100m Breaststroke earlier this week. The St. Louis native is competing in her third Paralympic Games, previously representing Team USA in London in 2012 and winning bronze in the 100m Breaststroke in Rio in 2016.

Torres, who is also a Fairfield Prep graduate, is participating in his first Paralympics this week in Tokyo after previously earning six medals at the 2019 World Para Swimming World Series. He earned bronze in the 400m Freestyle to collect the first medal of his young international swimming career.

Under the direction of Head Coach Anthony Bruno, Young was a part of three consecutive MAAC Championship teams at Fairfield from 2018-20. In Torres’ lone MAAC Championship to date in 2020, the Stags earned a sixth-place finish — their best team performance since 2012.
