As middle schools across the country were opening their doors, The Covenant School of Bridgeport prepared their teachers with training from the School of Education and Human Development (SEHD). Interim Dean Evelyn Lolis held a workshop focusing on “Middle School-Minded Instruction”, where she explored the neuroanatomy of the developing adolescent brain and its impact on classroom learning.

The professional development session held by Dean Lolis focused on the exploration of physical, emotional, social, and moral milestones among middle schoolers. The session’s goal was for teachers to understand the unique middle school years and how to best serve and inspire students. Additionally, “We shared tangible strategies for how to sensitively and compassionately support the learning and socio-emotional needs of middle school boys,” said Dean Lolis.

To complement this conversation, Associate Dean Joshua Elliot provided teachers with effective Google Classroom training from design to implementation. The perspectives offered by Dean Lolis and Associate Dean Elliot sought to be beneficial to the daily activities of The Covenant School teachers.

According to the Principal of The Covenant School, Dave Olson, investing a “considerable amount of time into training our teachers” was a priority from day one.  To align with The Covenant School's mission of developing young leaders and supporting student success, training became a key factor for teachers to cultivate a productive and encouraging school environment.

“We are most grateful for the commitment of Fairfield University to our cause as two faculty members hosted workshops with our team prior to the start of school,” said Principal Dave Olson.

The Covenant School aids students and alumni on their journeys in education from enrollment through the start of their careers. SEHD seeks to continue to partner with The Covenant School by offering additional professional development and encouraging undergraduate students to engage in community service opportunities through Fairfield’s Campus Ministry.
