Author Walter Kirn Brings Sharp Wit and Wisdom to Fairfield's Open VISIONS Forum

Fairfield University’s Regina A Quick Center for the Arts is honored to welcome author Walter Kirn as part of the Open VISIONS Forum on Wednesday, March 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Walter Kirn, author of bestselling novels such as Up in the Air and Thumbsucker, is renowned for his sharp wit, keen observations, and ability to dissect American culture with precision and humor. His works, which span novels, essays, and articles, have been adapted into award-winning films and remain deeply influential in literary and cultural landscapes. Co-host of podcast American This Week,  Kirn will offer “From Rural County Highway Magazine to the Boston Post Road” at the Quick Center.

“Walter Kirn is not just a wonderful novelist, he's also a brilliant and brave and idiosyncratic public thinker,” said Fairfield University professor and critically acclaimed author Phil Klay. “Even in disagreement, I learn by engaging with his voice and perspective, and he's a wonderful conversationalist, so it should make for a great event.”

Kirn is taking part in the Open VISIONS Forum series to discuss his American journey. Detailing how he went from life in rural Minnesota to Princeton University to Oxford University, and to Vanity Fair, Kirn will share his experiences with instructors, schools, and peers while simultaneously engaging in the demanding journey of obtaining an education. His insights on achievement, social class, and ambition illuimate what he believes to be the true meaning of success.

“A funny, self-mocking memoir about how persistently Mr. Kirn went astray. . . . Great fun.” -- The New York Times on Kirn’s memoir Lost in the Meritocracy: The Undereducation of an Overachiever.
