Kimberly (Malec) Kollar ’90 and Matthew Kollar ’88

It was the end of my freshman year at Fairfield University, and I had no idea that a chance encounter at the Stag-Her Inn would change my life forever. I had just finished up another day of studying in the library, surrounded by books and the usual college hustle, when I first noticed him. He was unshaven, wearing rugby gear, and exuded an undeniable confidence. We exchanged glances—nothing too dramatic, just a quick moment of recognition. Little did I know, that split second would lead to a story for the ages.

Later that evening, fate brought us together at the Stag-Her Inn. He boldly approached me, a bit of a surprise given I was sitting with friends. Without missing a beat, he asked for my number...and my roommate's too. It was a bold move, but it worked. The night ended, and Matthew went back to New Jersey for the summer. While back home, Matthew decided to let his little sister choose between my number and my roommate’s. She picked mine. And so, the phone calls began, and before long, we were officially dating.

Fast forward to 1992. After spending a few years together, we tied the knot at the newly built campus Chapel—a perfect setting for the next chapter in our journey. We celebrated our marriage with an unforgettable honeymoon at Pebble Beach and Maui, soaking up every bit of the joy that life had to offer. Then, we settled in Stamford, just a stone's throw from the university that brought us together, and we've made it our home ever since. Over the years, we built a life filled with love, laughter, and family. We were blessed with three beautiful children, all of whom share our love for golf and music.

As I reflect on all the memories we've created, I smile at how our story continues to unfold. Last summer, our 22-year-old daughter visited the Seagrape with a group of friends from Stamford. Watching her laugh and reminisce about her time in Fairfield reminded me of all the special moments Matthew and I had in that very place. Fairfield University not only gave us an education but also brought us together—a gift we will forever cherish.

So, to Fairfield, and to the place where it all began: Thank you for bringing us together in 1987. Here's to the many memories, the fantastic friends we met there, and the continued adventure of life.
