Welcome to Institutional Research

Established in Fall 2007, the Office of Institutional Research (OIR) provides a comprehensive program of institutional research and planning. Consistent with its charge to support the University's mission and strategic objectives, the OIR reports to the Provost.

The OIR is charged with ensuring the integrity and reliability of information for effective decision-making and institutional planning. The Office coordinates the collection, organization, analysis, and reporting of all institutional data in order to provide consistent and timely information to administrators, faculty, trustees, and other internal and external constituencies. The Office produces the annual Fact Book, coordinates surveys of students and other campus groups, and serves as the primary contact for compliance reporting to state, federal, and accrediting agencies. Members of the OIR staff also initiate major research projects and provide consultation on research methods, data integrity and data base analysis, survey design and analysis, and institutional assessment activities.

Fact Book

The University Fact Book is the primary source for information on the University’s Mission Statement, Students, Faculty and Staff, Library, Alumni, Endowment and Development, Facilities, and History. The University Fact Book is published on an annual basis to include the most recent data for Fall of that current academic year.

Fact Sheet

The IR Fact Sheet is produced by the Office of Institutional Research. The Fact Sheet serves as a quick and easy source for commonly requested information on our undergraduate student population, financial aid, standardized test scores, residence life, faculty and more.

The data is based on the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) definitions and reporting standards.

Fall Enrollment Quick Facts

The Fall Enrollment Quick Facts are made available each Fall and provide easily accessible counts on Fairfield’s student body by enrollment status, level, and gender.

Common Data Set (CDS)

The Common Data Set (CDS) is a collaborative effort among data providers in the higher education community and publishers as represented by the College Board, Peterson's, U.S.News & World Report, and the Wintergreen/Orchard House. The combined goal of this effort is to improve the quality and accuracy of information provided to all involved in a student's transition into higher education, as well as to reduce the reporting burden on data providers.

The CDS is a set of standards and definitions of data items. Each of the higher education surveys conducted by the above publishers incorporates the items from the CDS as well as unique items proprietary to the publisher. Fairfield University completes the CDS in the fall of each year with October 1 being the census date.

If you have any questions on the CDS items or answers, please email us.
